Atherton
The town of Atherton was established in 1885. In 1886 the first block sold to W. Kelly who established a general store and hotel in Cook Street. Thomas Peake established the Barron Valley Hotel as a bark shanty in 1890. In 1897 the substantial two story Exchange Hotel was built for Mark Brazier in Main Street. The Atherton Hotel also built by Mark Brazier in 1903 was an impressive two story structure. The Commonwealth Hotel was a one story hotel at 56 Main Street but was a two storey structure when it burned down in 1930. The Railway (renamed the Carrington in 1960) stood on the opposite corner. The licence for the Exchange Hotel was transferred to the Grand Hotel which was built on the site of the Commonwealth Hotel.
