Breweries and Beer Merchants
Breweries in Herberton, Charters Towers, Townsville and Cairns supplied the hotels of the area.
The Townsville Brewery commenced in December 1883.
The Herberton Brewery commenced on 18th March 1886 by Patrick Dunne on a block known as Brewery Hill on Rolley Road Wondecla. In February 1890 the brewery was sold to W Corrie who ran it as The Edinburgh Brewing Company with Herbert Coomber formerly from the Fitzroy Brewery as brewer. J. James bought the brewery on 1st August 1890 with Herbert Coomber being retained as brewer. The great flood in March 1894 appears to have washed a large vat containing a ton of malt against a bridge which may have been the end of the brewery.
Kamerunga brewery operated from 1888.
The Lion Brewery in Townsville 1894-1898 supplied XXX Beer. This brewery amalgamated with the Towers Brewery (Charters Towers) and traded as Northern Breweries (Queensland) Limited 1898 – 1908.
The Cairns Brewery Company operated from 1924-1927 with the first beer on the market in July 1925. This brewery became Northern Australian Breweries 1927-1931 until it was sold to Carlton & United Breweries which retained the name until 1972 when it operated as Carlton & United Breweries (NQ) Ltd. The name changed again to Carlton & United Breweries (Queensland) Ltd. In 1986. The Brewery closed in 1992 with all operations transferred to Yatala. Package brands from this brewery included NQ Lager, Cairns Bitter Ale and Gold Top Pale Ale. Cairns Draught supplied in 18-gallon kegs was also bottled by hotels and sold in 26 oz bottles.
Castlemaine Perkins supplied packaged XXXX beer from its Milton brewery, but it was not until the 1970’s that XXXX draught was available on tap in North Queensland.
Beer and spirit merchants supplying the area included Burns Philip & Co., Joseph Pease Pty Ltd., Samuel Allen & Co Ltd who sold to Carlton & United in February 1979, Cummins & Campbell, Lennon & Co., Walsh & Co., and P.J. Doyle who owned 15 hotels and sold to Carlton & United in 1938.
