Towns
Towns were established following discovery of minerals in the area. The first town established on the tablelands was Herberton in 1880 following discovery of tin. Herberton had 14 hotels in 1884 for a population less than 1000. Following that the silver mining town of Newelltown in 1882, tin mining towns of Coolgarra 1884, Mount Garnet 1900, Nymbool 1902 . Coolgarra had 8 hotels in 1887 to service its tin mining population. Mount Garnet with its silver and tin mining had 6 hotels at its peak in 1902.
The timber industry spawned new towns of Malanda 1910, Millaa Millaa 1910, Ravenshoe 1907, Tolga 1903 (previously Martintown), Yungaburra 1909 (previously known as Allumbah).
The building of the railway from Cairns saw shanties and eventually substantial hotels established to quench the navvies thirsts. Tolga boasted 6 hotels in 1909 with a population of only 200. The local police complained the 9 watering holes along the 11 miles of track around Atherton was excessive.
As the railway expanded new hotels were established. Yungaburra 1910, Kureen 1911, Peeramon 1911, Pioneer Tumoulin 1912 , Tarzali 1918, Moynihans Herberton Range 1908, and Tom Bolands Herberton Range 1908.
