Families
Some families had associations with numerous hotels.
ALGAR
The Algars conducted hotels in Herberton, Townsville and Bowen. Annie Sparks who ran the Australian Hotel in 1894/5 married Henry Algar. Annie Algar owned the Australian Hotel from 1901 until 1926.
Henry ran the hotel from 1918 until his death in 1923.
In 1914 John Algar brother of Henry married Alice Torlach who owned the Royal Hotel in Herberton . He held the licence for the Empire Hotel Townsville in 1915 for 11 months,Carlton Hotel Townsville 1917 for 10 months, Queens Hotel Townsville 1918 and the North Australian Hotel Bowen from 1917 to 1920.
John's sister Mrs Hicks managed the North Australian Hotel Bowen in 1918 when he moved to Townsville to take over the Queens.
ARMANACQ
Peter Armanacq built the Republic Hotel in Coolgarra. His daughter Mrs A. M Lenton ran the Royal Hotel in Herberton with her husband from 1931 to 1937.
BIMROSE
Richard Bimrose (Machine Site Hotel Northcote 1879) opened Herberton Hotel in 1880 as a shanty pub and had licence until his death in 1894. Johanna Bimrose his wife ran the Herberton Hotel 1896-1913. Son A.N. Bimrose ran hotel 1914-1927. Daughter Ellen married William Smyth (Post Office Hotel 1902-1913) and also ran the Royal Hotel 1915-1920.
EDWARDS
John Edwards and his wife ran hotels in Ravenshoe, Mareeba, Tumoulin and Tolga. John Edwards built the Ravenshoe Hotel in 1927. Sylvinia Edwards his wife was the first publican. John Edwards ran the Club Hotel Ravenshoe in 1918, Pioneer Hotel Tumoulin 1916. Mrs Edwards had the Royal Hotel Mareeba in 1925 and the Mareeba Refreshment Rooms in 1930 before taking over the Ravenshoe Hotel again in that year from husband John Edwards.
John & Sylvinia Edwards great grand daughter bought the Ravenshoe Hotel in 2014.
ENGLISH
James English a pioneer of the Malanda district built the Malanda Hotel in 1911 and his wife Catherine and daughter Mary ran it until 1922 when he transferred it to his son in law Jack Hanrahan.
Jack ran the hotel until his death in 1970.
His son Keith owned it until 1975 when Tom English took over .In 2012 his son Michael English became licencee.
GORDON
Robert Gordon ran the Carriers Arms Hotel in Carrington 1893/4 and 1896. His wife Elizabeth Gordon ran it in 1883 and 1908.
William Charles Gordon son of Robert and Elizabeth Gordon built the Club Hotel in Ravenshoe and ran it 1912-1916 and 1924-1937. Mrs Margaret Gordon ran it 1918 and 1943. Mrs Gordon was Mrs Power who had the Range Hotel Carrington in 1910 when she transferred the licence to Flaggy Creek Hotel Kalunga. In 1912 she transferred the licence to the Club Hotel Ravenshoe. Margaret Gordon’s father Arena ran a hotel at Herberton Range.
Their daughter Ellen Elizabeth and son Robert Verdon Gordon ran the Club 1941-1948.
HALFPAPP
F & A Halfpapp commenced their hotel ownership when they established the hotel at Petersens Creek at Kulara in 1884. That hotel closed in 1912. Mrs Halfpapp moved to Atherton and was the first licencee of the Exchange Hotel in 1897. Mrs Halfpapp ran the Commercial Hotel in Watsonville in 1901/2.
HAYES
Bernard (Barney) Hayes inherited his brother’s hotel at Rocky Creek in 1887. In 1888 with his new wife Sarah he ran the hotel until 1903 when they moved to the Martintown (Tolga) Hotel which they ran until Barneys death in 1911. In 1913 Sarah moved to the Pioneer Hotel Tumoulin and ran that until 1915. She then moved to the Lake Barrine Hotel at Kulara which she owned until 1934 when she sold it to her sister in law Mrs Molloy.
Sarah’s son Barney ran the Commonwealth Hotel Atherton until it was destroyed by fire in 1932.
HEALE
Ted Heale built the Kureen Hotel next to his dairy. His mother married W Thomson who ran the Kureen Hotel 1917 to 1919.
KELLY
W.B. Kelly the first landholder in Atherton constructed a hotel and store on his allotment. Daughter Mary married Ernest Wienert who ran the Picnic Crossing Hotel at Kulara. Another daughter married Mark Brazier who built the Exchange Hotel Atherton and Atherton Hotel.
LUCEY
Denis Lucey built Mount Garnet Hotel 1898. When he died in 1909 his wife Julia took over. When she deceased in 1928 the hotel was left to son Leonard and daughter Mary ran it. Grand daughters Sheila Campbell and Erin Alekna ran it from 1982 until 1999.
MARTIN
Mrs Halfpapps daughter married Joe Martin who built the Family Hotel at Martintown (Tolga).
MAZLIN
In 1928 Ernest Mazlin along with John Edwards built the Ravenshoe Hotel. He was a timber mill owner. His brother Victor ran the Peeramon Hotel in 1940, Australian Hotel in 1943 and Royal Hotel Herberton in 1944 and 1945. Another brother Percy had the Australian in 1943 and 1944.
MOSES
Mr & Mrs Moses moved to Atherton after running hotels in Rockhampton, Clermont, Ilfracombe and Longreach. They took over the Exchange Hotel in Atherton. Mrs Moses ran the hotel after the death of her husband until 1932 when the hotel was destroyed by fire. The licence of the hotel was transferred to a new Grand hotel which opened in 1933. Mrs Moses ran that hotel until her death in 1953.
NASSER
Sconder Nasser bought the Barron Valley Hotel in 1930. In 1939 the old wooden hotel was rebuilt in 1930 art deco style. Sconder married Mrs Moses daughter Amelia. They both worked initially at the Exchange Hotel for Amelia’s parents.
Their son Harold ran the hotel from 1945. In 2009 Harold’s son Michael and took over the licence with this brother David running the detached bottle shop.
Another son Doug bought the licence of the Millstream (now Ravenshoe) Hotel in 1951 and ran it for the next 50 years.
WILLIAMS
Henry Sydney Williams ran a store, butchery and the Carriers Arms Hotel at Carrington in 1895. He was killed in 1905 but his family set up a shanty hotel at Allumbah (Yungaburra) in 1907 under the name Estate HS Williams.
The hotel was run by his 16 year old daughter Marion Maud Williams. A two story timber hotel constructed from cedar and maple was built in 1910 and extended in 1926. The licence was issued to Frederick and then Albert Williams. Maud Williams who married the Yungaburra stationmaster Kehoe ran the hotel from his death in 1933 until her death in 1971.
From 1907 to 1911 SA Williams ran the Carrington Hotel. Albert Williams built a two story hotel at Tarzali Hotel in 1918. Marion Bedelia Wardle whose mother was Frances Amelia Wardle (nee Williams) married William David Lehfeldt who bought the Tarzali Hotel in 1927 jointly with his brother Martin Rudolph Lehfeldt.
